Squaw Valley Academy Bay Area students participated in an on-campus Pumpkin Carving Contest.
Students picked up their pumpkins from the selection in the main office. After making their choice, designing began some students got straight to work, while others researched designs online. Many of our international students had never carved a pumpkin before. At first, the students were caught off guard by the slimy pumpkin, but everyone ended up having fun with the process.
This activity allowed students to think both critically and creatively. They had to be careful not to scrape out their pumpkin too much, or carve their design incorrectly. Some students even worked together, helping each other with design work or holding the pumpkin steady. It was great to see students coming together and experience campus-wide community building. Once every student had completed their pumpkin creation the pumpkins were set up at tables for judging to begin. Students and faculty walked through and selected their favorite pumpkin designs.
Afterwards, office staff counted up the votes and shared the news with the students. On the right side of this post you can see our three winners; Amelia, Alberto, and Willow. They did an amazing job with their pumpkins, it was great to see them delve into their creative side. Students were allowed to take their pumpkins home at the end of the day and were able to use them just in time for Halloween.
